STATEMENT FROM CALIFORNIA DOMESTIC WORKERS COALITION
“I used to say Gaza was an open-air prison. Now I say it’s an open-air grave.” – Wafa Elsaka, a Palestinian-American who has fled from the north of Gaza over the past few days. (NYT-The Daily)
The California Domestic Workers Coalition (CDWC) extends our deep care and sorrow through a time of grief and mourning due to the horrific violence and bloodshed that continues to unfold in Palestine and Israel. We join the growing demand for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. To date, at least 4,100 Palestinian civilians and 1,400 Israeli civilians have been killed in the recent escalation of violence, including migrant domestic workers who have been working in the region.
For the last 75 years, the settler-colonial state of Israel has been built on the forced displacement of Palestinians and illegal occupation of their homeland Palestine. Today, more than 2-million Palestinians live in an open-air prison in Gaza. Half of them are unemployed with extremely limited access to food, water and healthcare.
We are currently witnessing genocide of Palestinians in real time, in an unprecedented level of targeted harm inflicted by the Israeli military. Our U.S. tax dollars go to supporting a military machine that is murdering civilians.
An annual $3.8 billion U.S. tax dollars allows Israel to pursue colonial aggression and apartheid, unleashing relentless violence and dangerously harmful propaganda against the Palestinian people. Israel’s aggression has intensified with intent to not only displace, but annihilate the Palestinian people from their native lands. In turn, this historic and ongoing aggression has also provoked violence committed against innocent Israeli citizens and residents.
We believe that all human beings should have what we need to live full and dignified lives and do so without fear. Instead of funding murderous war machines, we want our tax dollars to fund education, housing, health care and vital programs and services that support people and communities.
In a statement from the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC): The Israeli government implements “systematized land seizures, routine air strikes, military checkpoints and arbitrary imprisonment. Palestinians are subjected to a constant state of fear, violence and death.”
Here in the U.S., Palestinians and allies are met with hatred and violence, even criminalized and targeted by the government.
We must de-escalate the violence and save as many lives as possible, instead of sending arms to Israel. Alongside the thousands who have been mobilizing across the world, we join U.S. legislators including Representatives Cori Bush (MO), Rashida Tlaib (MI), André Carson (IN), Summer Lee (PA), and Delia C. Ramirez (IL), alongside Representatives Jamaal Bowman (NY), Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ), Jesús “Chuy” García (IL), Jonathan Jackson (IL), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY), Ilhan Omar (MN, Ayanna Pressley (MA), Nydia Velázquez (NY) and too many more to list who announced a resolution urging the Biden Administration to call for an immediate ceasefire, and to send humanitarian aid and assistance to Gaza. We are also calling for an end to the annual $3.8 billion U.S. tax dollars that supports Israel’s ongoing military repression against the Palestinian people.
We stand against colonial aggression, apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide. We raise our voices alongside Palestine and Palestinians in diaspora in their fight for freedom and their self-determination. So many domestic workers have been forced to migrate from their home countries due to unequal policies and occupation, and we believe that the fight to free Palestine is intertwined with the genuine freedom and liberation of all people who experience injustice and oppression.

La Coalición de Trabajadoras del Hogar de California (CDWC) extiende nuestro profundo querer y dolor en este tiempo de duelo debido a la horrible violencia y derramamiento de sangre que continúa desarrollándose en Palestina e Israel. Nos sumamos a la creciente demanda de un alto el fuego inmediato en Gaza.
