Domestic Workers Deserve Health and Safety Protections

Household workers such as nannies, house cleaners, and homecare workers assist people with disabilities and care for our elders, our children, and our homes. They deserve basic labor protections just like any other worker in California. Since the first Domestic Worker Bill of Rights Campaign in 2006, we at the California Domestic Workers Coalition have lifted the call to end the exclusion of domestic workers from basic health and safety protections granted by Cal/OSHA.

In 2024, domestic workers led the passage of SB 1350, a bill that grants protections to hundreds of thousands of domestic workers who are employed by homecare agencies, housecleaning companies and small independent contractors.

SB 1350 also extends protections to those household workers who are asked to do work outside of the home such as landscaping and gardening as well as those who are required to do extraordinary tasks such as mold and wildfire remediation or clean up, remodeling, painting, pool maintenance, and any work in the home that requires a license.

Whether you are covered by SB 1350 or not, all domestic workers can take important steps to protect themselves at the workplace, and domestic employers can develop injury and illness prevention plans to ensure a safe work environment.
